Accessible Japanese Automatic: Seiko 5 SNKF73J1, 37mm, Silver Dial
Collection
The Seiko SNKF73J1 belongs to the Seiko 5 series, which has been in continuous production for over six decades. It is one of the few entry-level automatics to rely on an in-house caliber: the 7S26, which is reliable and inexpensive to maintain. It features a 37mm case, 30m water resistance, and an exhibition case back to observe the rotor.
Case
Made of stainless steel, the case of the Seiko SNKF73J1 measures 37mm in diameter and 11mm in thickness. The bezel is fixed. The dial is protected by Hardlex crystal, a proprietary Seiko treatment for light scratches. The case back is exhibition (transparent), allowing observation of the movement in operation. Water resistance is 30m, suitable for splashes and rain.
Movement
The Seiko SNKF73J1 is powered by the automatic caliber 7S26, offering an approximately 41-hour power reserve. This movement does not feature hacking (stop-seconds for precise time setting) or manual winding — two functions intentionally absent on this entry-level caliber. Its accuracy oscillates around ±15 seconds per day, which is expected for an automatic movement in this segment.
Bracelet
The stainless steel bracelet of the Seiko SNKF73J1, secured by a folding clasp, consistently complements the case. The lug width is 18mm.
