Seiko 5 Black SNKG23J1: 40-hour power reserve, 37 mm, 18 mm lug width
Collection
The Seiko SNKG23J1 belongs to the Seiko 5 series, which has been in continuous production for over six decades. It is one of the rare entry-level automatics to rely on an in-house caliber: the 7S26, which is reliable and inexpensive to maintain. It features a 37 mm case, 30 m water resistance, and an exhibition case back to observe the rotor.
Case
Made of stainless steel, the case of the Seiko SNKG23J1 measures 37 mm in diameter and is 11 mm thick. The bezel is fixed. The dial is protected by Hardlex glass, a proprietary Seiko treatment for light scratches. The case back is exhibition (transparent), allowing observation of the movement in operation. Its water resistance is 30 m, suitable for splashes and rain.
Movement
The Seiko SNKG23J1 is powered by the 7S26 automatic caliber, offering a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. This movement has neither hacking (second hand stop for precise time setting) nor manual winding — two intentionally absent functions on this entry-level caliber. Its accuracy oscillates around ±15 seconds per day, which is expected for an automatic movement in this segment.
Bracelet
The stainless steel bracelet of the Seiko SNKG23J1, secured by a folding clasp, complements the case cohesively. The lug width is 18 mm.
