Accessible Japanese Automatic: Seiko 5 SNKK40J1, 37 mm, black dial
Collection
The Seiko SNKK40J1 belongs to the Seiko 5 series, which has been in continuous production for over six decades. It is one of the few entry-level automatics to use an in-house caliber: the reliable and low-maintenance 7S26. It features a 37 mm case, 30 m water resistance, and an exhibition case back to view the rotor.
Case
Made of stainless steel, the case of the Seiko SNKK40J1 measures 37 mm in diameter and 11 mm in thickness. The bezel is fixed. The dial is protected by Hardlex glass, a proprietary Seiko treatment for light scratches. The case back is an exhibition (transparent) type, allowing observation of the movement in operation. Water resistance is 30 m, suitable for splashes and rain.
Movement
The Seiko SNKK40J1 is powered by the automatic caliber 7S26, offering a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. This movement has neither hacking (stop seconds for time setting) nor manual winding — two functions intentionally absent on this entry-level caliber. Its precision hovers around ±15 seconds per day, which is expected for an automatic movement in this segment.
Bracelet
The stainless steel bracelet of the Seiko SNKK40J1, secured by a folding clasp, consistently complements the case. The lug width is 18 mm.
