Accessible Japanese Automatic: Seiko 5 SNKN55J1, 37mm, Black Dial
Collection
The Seiko SNKN55J1 belongs to the Seiko 5 series, produced continuously for over six decades. It is one of the few entry-level automatics to rely on an in-house caliber: the reliable and low-maintenance 7S26. 37mm case, 30m water resistance, exhibition case back to observe the rotor.
Case
The Seiko SNKN55J1's stainless steel case measures 37mm in diameter and 11mm thick. The bezel is fixed. The dial is protected by Hardlex glass, a proprietary Seiko treatment for light scratches. The case back is exhibition (transparent), allowing observation of the movement in operation. Water resistance is 30m, suitable for splashes and rain.
Movement
The Seiko SNKN55J1 is powered by the automatic caliber 7S26, offering a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. This movement does not feature hacking (stop seconds for time setting) or manual winding — two functions intentionally absent on this entry-level caliber. Its accuracy hovers around ±15 seconds per day, which is expected for an automatic movement in this segment.
Bracelet
The stainless steel bracelet of the Seiko SNKN55J1, secured by a deployant clasp, complements the case cohesively. The lug width is 18mm.
